NFL Rookie Contacts Wealth Disparities: Brady Quinn vs. Jamarcus Russell Part I
However, in Cleveland things are upside down. The Browns hope that the recent Brady Quinn deal will propel the former Notre Dame stand out to the starting position before the season ends. According to some reports, Quinn is the odds on favorite to be the guy sooner rather than later. By slipping past Miami, and falling in the 2007 NFL Draft to # 22 Quinn lost some serious wealth. If you look at his contact you probably won't feel to sorry for the former Irishman, he is guaranteed to receive $7.75 million in his five year $20.2 million contract. Not bad for a college graduate majoring in finance and political science.
People are comparing Brady to former USC Trojan 2006 rookie quarterback Matt Leinart. Take caution with that analysis who was drafted number ten in 2006. By the way, Leinart contract $14 million in guarantees in a potential $50.8 million six year deal. The Arizona Cardinal quarterback had the luxury of having two fantasy football studs in his receiving corps, Larry Fitzgerald and former FSU great Anquan Boldin.
Josh McNown is Adam Shefter's pick to be the guy in Oakland. We'll see how long he can hold off Culpepper. Right now the edge goes to McNown because of his familiarity with the offense. However, after a respectable preseason, expect the former pro-bowler to be under center before their bye week.
So the question of potential wealth for Quinn's draft day plummet cost him is somewhere around the spot most draft gurus had him going in the number 9 slot. However, Ted Ginn Jr. signed a five year deal with gaurantees of $14 million and Brady went another thirteen spots. Therefore, it would be a fair assessment to say at a minimum, Mr. Quinn watched his net worth drop about $7 million on a Saturday afternoon in the Spring before the pads were even put on.
Time will tell if he was worth that extra $7 million, but for now we will just have to see. In part two of NFL Rookie Contracts the difference of wealth between the first and second quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Jamarcus Russell will be analyzed.
